Estadio Azteca: A Return to the Cathedral of Football
The 2026 World Cup opens on June 11 at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, with Mexico vs. South Africa.
It is a fitting return to one of football’s most historic stages. Azteca last hosted a World Cup match in the legendary 1986 Final, when Argentina defeated West Germany 3–2 and Diego Maradona lifted the trophy into the Mexican sunlight.
Decades later, the players have changed, but the magic of the Azteca remains.
